His son Joey, parents, brother and sister
At 1:37 A.M., officers were called to a report of "shots fired" in the area of a night club. When officers arrived, witnesses said that a man had been shooting a pistol randomly as he walked down the street. They further advised that they had observed the man go into a room on the second floor of the "Wooden Indian Motel."
Corporal Polizzotto and Patrolman Michael Norby went to the door and knocked. Two other officers were on the ground below.
The suspect opened the door and spoke with the officers for approximately 15 seconds. He then produced a pistol and opened fire. Corporal Polizzotto, Patrolman Norby, and the perpetrator were wounded during the shootout. Corporal Polizzotto and the perpetrator died from their wounds. Patrolman Norby suffered a shoulder wound and was released from the hospital later that day.
This incident occurred just a few hours after a candlelight vigil commemorating the one year anniversary of the line of duty death of South Bend Police Corporal Scott Severns.
