Sergeant Bigus was shot after responding to a robbery at the local gas company. The suspect had managed to slip into a nearby department store when the officers arrived. Sergeant Bigus entered the store looking for the suspect and a struggle ensued. The suspect was able to twist Sergeant Bigus' right arm towards Sergeant Bigus, causing his firearm to discharge, striking himself in the stomach. Sergeant Bigus' right arm had been broken in four places in a motor vehicle accident six months earlier. He had gone through several surgeries and the cast had been removed two months earlier.
He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital where he died a short time later.
Although severely wounded, Sergeant Bigus was able to shoot the suspect as well, fatally wounding him.
