Captain Lyons died of severe burns that he received while fighting a fire in the Waters-Pierce Oil Company located at Fourteenth and Gratlot Streets. Captain Lyons, who was serving as acting Assistant Chief at the time, was burned and buried under falling debris following a gasoline explosion. An oil company employee also died in the incident and several other firefighters were injured.
