He was survived by his wife and two young daughters.
Patrolman Mead was shot and killed by a juvenile while attempting to arrest him for burglary. The suspect had stolen $12 and two guns from a tavern. Several officers noticed the suspect and as Patrolman Mead caught him he was shot in the chest and arm.
On November 15, 1944, the 16-year-old suspect was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to eight years in prison.
Patrolman Mead had been with the agency for only 17 days. Prior to his employment with the City of St. Joseph, Patrolman Mead had been a prize fighter.
