While working at a fire in a three-story building which housed the Langan Furniture and Carpet Company at Washington Avenue and Eighteenth Street, Firefighter Ost was killed when the roof collapsed on top of him. Six other firefighters were injured.
Firefighter Ost was a U.S. Army Veteran.
