Incident

Private Grady died after Engine 17 and Hook and Ladder 9 collided at Vandeventer and Easton while responding to an alarm. The accident also claimed the lives of Privates William Crump and Clarence Paschang.

Private Grady was the only African-American to be killed in the line of duty, up until Captain Derek Martin in 2002.
