Incident

Sergeant Fitzgibbons and Patrolman Thomas Quarles were attempting to arrest a robbery suspect, Irvin Anderson, when Anderson pulled a handgun, shot at the officers numerous times and fled the scene on foot. Sergeant Fitzgibbons was struck in the abdomen and later died. Patrolman Quarles was uninjured. Shortly after the shooting Anderson escaped to his grandfather's house in Underwood, IN, where he was later arrested.

Irvin Anderson was convicted of the murder of Sergeant Fitzgibbons and several armed robberies after a jury trial. He was sentenced to 'life' in the penitentiary.
