Sergeant Fitzgibbons and Patrolman Thomas Quarles were attempting to arrest a robbery suspect, Irvin Anderson, when Anderson pulled a handgun, shot at the officers numerous times and fled the scene on foot. Sergeant Fitzgibbons was struck in the abdomen and later died. Patrolman Quarles was uninjured. Shortly after the shooting Anderson escaped to his grandfather's house in Underwood, IN, where he was later arrested.
