Incident
Patrolman Thomas Smith was killed after being struck by a motorist while assisting at the scene of a previous accident.
He was standing next to a tow truck with the earlier accident victim when a van struck a patch of ice and slid into them. Patrolman Smith and the earlier victim died on the scene.
Patrolman Smith is the eighth St. Louis County officer to die in the line of duty.
