Trooper Fred L. Walker, 33, was shot on December 3, 1941 near Saint Genevieve, Missouri following a vehicle stop which resulted in the arrest of two suspects after it was determined that the vehicle they were traveling in was stolen.
As Trooper Walker was transporting the two subjects to Festus, Missouri one of the prisoners pulled out a hidden pistol and shot Trooper Walker. The two suspects then threw Trooper Walker from the car, and they fled in the patrol car taking Trooper Walker's hand gun with them.
Trooper Walker made his way back to the area where the original stop had taken place, and he was transported by a nearby farm owner to Crystal City, Missouri (using the stolen vehicle for transport). Trooper Walker was then transported by ambulance from Crystal City to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis where he succumbed to his injuries.
On January 17, 1942, both suspects were sentenced to 99 years in prison after they plead guilty to second degree murder.
Trooper Fred L. Walker, 33, was the second officer to die in the line of duty.
