Incident

On October 14, 1969 Trooper Jesse R. Jenkins was shot and killed inside the Montgomery County Sheriff's office by a prisoner.

The prisoner had just appeared before a judge for arraignment on burglary charges. He was transported back to the Montgomery County Sheriff's office and was seated next to the Sheriff. The Sheriff received a phone call, and upon answering the call, the prisoner grabbed his service revolver and attempted to escape. Trooper Jenkins drew his weapon and the two men exchanged shots. Both Trooper Jenkins and the prisoner received fatal wounds during the exchange of gunfire.

Trooper Jesse R. Jenkins, 29, was the eighth trooper to die in the line of duty.
