Officer Daniel Ellis

While looking for a suspect from a robbery that had occurred at a gas station earlier in the day, officers entered a home where the wanted vehicle had been located. The occupant denied that the wanted suspect was there.

As Officer Ellis entered a room, the wanted suspect stepped from behind a door and shot him in the head. Another officer returned fire and wounded the shooter.

Both the suspect and a resident were arrested and charged with murder. It was later learned that the shooter had stated to the resident his intention to shoot an officer if they entered. The resident was charged due to his awareness of the shooter's intent and his failure to warn officers. The shooter agreed to a plea deal to spend life in prison without parole; the resident pleaded guilty and was sentenced to no less than 30 years in prison. A third accomplice was given three years of probation after spending a year in jail.

Officer Ellis was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries two days later.

In May 2016, U.S. Route 25-Main Street in Richmond was renamed Officer Daniel Ellis Memorial Highway.
