Incident

While Patrolman Roth attempted to make an arrest for public drunkenness near the foot of Clay Street near the Ohio River, the drunken subject assaulted the officer with a rock causing several lacerations. Patrolman Roth developed tetanus as a result of the wounds and died a week later.

The subject claimed self-defense and was acquitted during a jury trial.
