Captain Grider and Firefighter Alex Quinn were injured from high-voltage electric shocks while assisting students of the Campbellsville University marching band participate in an "ALS Ice Bucket Challenge."
The two firefighters were in the extended bucket of the truck's ladder spraying water on the band members when a surge of electricity arced from nearby power lines and shocked them. Both men were rushed to University of Louisville Hospital – Captain Grider in critical condition and Firefighter Quinn listed as "serious."
Captain Grider succumbed to his injuries 30 days later. Firefighter Quinn recovered and was released from the hospital 26 days after the incident.
