Incident
Officer Westerfield was discovered unresponsive in his patrol car by a resident just before 6:00 A.M. (Central) Sunday morning in the 2600 block of Van Buren. He had responded to a report of shots fired a few hours earlier, and it is thought he had returned to monitor the area. He was shot and killed while sitting in his car.
Officer Westerfield was 47 years old and a 19-year veteran of the Gary Police Department. The incident occurred on his birthday.
