Officer Renn and another officer were dispatched at 9:24 P.M. to the area of East 34th Street and Forest Manor Avenue on a report of "shots fired." Upon arrival, they observed a man in a nearby alley with an assault rifle. As the officers exited their vehicles, the man opened fire and a gun battle ensued.
At 9:28 P.M., dispatchers were notified "Officer Down."
Officer Renn was mortally wounded. The suspect was critically wounded.
