Detective Sergeant Carl Heckman was shot and killed while he and another officer were on a stakeout. The officers were investigating a series of laundry truck robberies that had been occurring.
Both suspects were apprehended and convicted of murder. One offender was sentenced to life in prison and the other was sentenced to death. On October 1, 1934, he was executed by electrocution.
Detective Sergeant Heckman had served with the Indianapolis Police Department for two years. He was survived by his wife, 1½- and 6-year-old sons and 3-year-old daughter.
