As he was responding to a call in the early morning hours of June 12, 1999, Deputy Sheriff Mitchell's cruiser slid off the roadway and crashed into a guardrail during a heavy rainstorm. Deputy Sheriff Mitchell was transported to St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point where he died.
