Officer Carpenter died as the result of an infection caused by an injury to his hand sustained during a struggle with a prisoner. His hand was cut when he struck the prisoner in the teeth and a serious infection developed which required surgery.
Officer Carpenter died at Baptist Hospital 13 days later as a result of the infection.

The Louisville Division of Police has been disbanded and absorbed by the Louisville Metro Police Department.
