As he drove the chemical engine to an alarm at Box 25 at Chapin and Dunham Streets, Firefighter Martin was thrown from his seat after the horses ran through a ditch. He fell between the horses and was run over by the wagon. Firefighter Martin was taken to his home and a doctor was summoned, however he died from his injuries a few hours later.
